With a Disney+ bundle arriving in November, fresh news arrives detailing a potential distribution deal between Spectrum and Disney. The possible streaming service agreement dovetails on the back of another content distribution deal signed by the two companies this week.

News about both appeared yesterday in Telecompetitor among other sources. With the cord-cutting trend in full force, Spectrum hopes to keep their broadband customers in the fold. For its part, Disney wants subscribers for their new bundled offering, providing Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu for $12.99 per month.

Strategic Reasons Behind the Agreement Between Disney and Spectrum

As noted earlier, both Spectrum and Disney feel their agreement helps them better compete in a changing streaming market. Both content providers and ISPs hope to attract the attention of cordcutters.

Disney wants customers to choose their bundle over Netflix and AT&T's upcoming HBO Max service. Spectrum needs cordcutters dropping their cable TV service to stay with their Internet product.

Tom Montemagno, EVP, Programming Acquisition for Charter, owner of Spectrum, commented on their Disney partnership: "This agreement will allow Spectrum to continue delivering to its customers popular Disney content, makes possible future distribution by Spectrum of Disney streaming services, and will begin an important collaborative effort to address the significant issue of piracy mitigation."

Ultimately, Spectrum provides subscribers to Disney, while the latter offers compelling content to attract those customers. This synergy is necessary to compete in a market where AT&T and Comcast are both Internet and content providers.

A Closer Look at the New Disney+ Streaming Service

The upcoming Disney+ service remains a major reason behind the partnership between Disney and Spectrum parent, Charter. In fact, Disney chief, Bob Iger, feels it's the most important product for the company during his tenure. In addition to Spectrum, Disney has other distribution partnerships in the works, likely including Amazon.

Still, not many hard details exist about the Disney+ content. Of course, expect the full range of Disney movie classics from Snow White to Fantasia. The company also owns rights to movies and TV shows including Star Wars, Marvel Comics, Pixar, and more.

New and classic live-action and animated TV shows are part of the mix. Yes, this includes the classic Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Also, rumors of an Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Ewan McGregor broke today. Disney+ launches on November 12, with a monthly price of $6.99.

Expect many subscribers – especially families – to opt for the Disney+ bundle. As noted above, this adds ESPN+ and the basic Hulu service for $12.99 per month. ESPN+ provides a cornucopia of niche sports content, including a massive amount of world soccer leagues.

Obviously, it's a deal attractive to many current Spectrum subscribers, thus their new partnership.
